The work "Boundless" is inspired by the Tang Dynasty "Sutra Paintings" from the Mogao and Yulin Caves. The architecture was one of the most common subjects in Tang Dynasty wall paintings and was most often used as a backdrop for transformations and various story paintings. In the most typical "Pure Land Transformation" from the Middle Tang Dynasty onward, the background is mainly composed of gorgeous buildings and pavilions. How did the painters of more than 1400 years ago handle the depiction of the "Western World of Bliss"? The so-called Western Elysium is the most beautiful place in people's ideal. On earth, the royal palace should be the most beautiful scene, they thought, so the painters at that time naturally used the palace as the prototype to depict the Western Elysium.
The main body of "Boundless" consists of a "main hall" and four "quadrangles", and the overall shape is in line with the structure of a traditional Chinese architectural hall, which is symmetrical in the center. The work uses about 6,300 steel pipes of the standard length of 6 m, cut into 17 different sizes and about 30,000 fasteners. The author intends to break the shackles of imagination, exclude the possible pleasure of color and the obsession with grandeur and prosperity, and choose a clean and pure modeling language, with pure white steel pipes in the scorched desert and blue sky in a reckless combination. The simple shape, the pure color, and the exclusive location on the Gobi make "Boundless" seem like a secondary universe independent of the central universe and an unfinished world - the combination of fastening scaffolding steel forming method makes the work always present a visual impression of construction in progress.
In terms of the specific method, they used on-site production, which means that they emphasized the artist's presence as the subject of creation. The work "Boundless" is located in Guangzhou County, which is known as the "wind bank of the world", with an average daily wind speed of four to five, and wind of seven or eight is common, and the work "Boundless" is constructed entirely of steel in a linear structure, making it hollow, so it does not form too much wind resistance and is suitable for placement in windy environments. It can be said that this public art creation is a collaboration between the artist and the local government, a collaboration between the artists and the media. The work presents the characteristics of publicness, openness, public welfare, and landmark.
