The work "Sequestration" is an artistic creation related to urban upgrading and renovation. The creation site is in a shantytown on the right bank of Yuanshui in Changde, Hunan Province. A modern new city will cover the demolished shantytown. The memory preservation of the old town and integrating the original new memories into the future city is the essential starting point for creating this series of works. Due to the demolition, the shantytown is full of building ruins leftover from the destruction. These architectural scraps bear the unique mark of each family's former living conditions. However, the expression of the building scraps varies from family to family, as each family had different preferences, tastes, and economic status when they built their own houses and therefore used different building materials and decorative techniques. The Sequestration Project hopes to seal and freeze these "micro-expressions".
The creation process starts with collecting the architectural and decorative materials from the building ruins that represent the characteristics of the occupants. The street information, the name of the household, and the GPS location points are identified and retained. At that point, the construction waste is sealed with cement into cubes of a specific size and allowed to dry and harden completely. Finally, the cubes are cut to reveal the various materials inside, and the occupants' information is engraved on the sealed bodies. In such a way, each sequester creates a correspondence with the original spatial positioning of the neighborhood. The whole work is exhibited in the public space of the new city. Sequestration is an ongoing artistic project until the entire shantytown will be demolished. It is also an interactive and personalized program that allows the residents to sequestrate the most precious objects according to their unique requirements. Years later, when the former owners of the houses touch this pile of sealed bodies again, they can recall the old houses, homes, and old stories from the vaguely recognizable unique building materials. These seals with unique marks constitute the memory nucleus of the city, telling the past and present life of the town.
