At first sight, the work is a wood carving with eyes. The eyes are divided into two kinds, one is to make it a living entity, and one is to carry the multitude of beings. Ma Wenjia pays attention to how the artworks change his values. Wood is alive, regarded as the same material like stone and ironstone, though it was a living tree before. Artist enhanced the characteristics of the living three through sculpture and eyes. He made it stay in one phase of human civilization history, which people are more concerned about its sense of life. This sense is very familiar to Ma Wenjia's self-perception concept; although he is alive, not everyone regards him as life. They do not want to know his energy and personality; however, they will notice Ma Wenjia's life uniqueness with the works, making him more valuable.
The reason for choosing these everyday objects is to give new meaning to life by paying attention to and depicting the details of ordinary objects. These familiar objects include the packed cartons used repeatedly in the rushing life, clothes that are constantly folded and ironed, archival bags, and books that are regularly used in the changes of work and study. They may represent some memories, one's own experience, and ourselves as well. These objects accompany a person's growth, and they are the witness of one's life form and the portrayal of life.
The history is morphological as numerous civilization seals record characteristic time nodes. Events without features cannot represent the appearance and essence of the present time they live, which will finally be forgotten. As the most active and creative thinking result of human thoughts, art is the material carrier that can perfectly record the situation of the era.
Ma Wenjia expresses his opinions on art from the emotional level; art may mean a form of life, a kind of moral ethics, and micro-cycle commitment, which may make him see art from a less free and liberal perspective. Feeling depressed and anxious from time to time, a person cannot carry out an orderly spiritual life only with firm philosophical belief. Bigotry is Ma Wenjia's hobby and way of acting, and perhaps it is more beneficial to the process of human thought than any great moderation. Desires of humans do not mean freedom, and only through being minded can people have the right to be free. Only by thinking positively and restraining ourselves well when facing life can we find the original appearance of infinite life in a limited life. This way of thinking is what life and art mean to him.
Professor Xiangqun Li's commented on Ma Wenjia's artworks: "Not to show superb artistic techniques, but to incorporate 'realm' into the most direct level of expression. He always integrates realistic modeling elements with abstract formal languages to show philosophical weirdness and brings the viewer into long-term thinking with serenity rather than instant pleasure."
